Just have to shout out a big ol'
Where I work, the design engineers are assigned to a handful of dams and we become the responsible engineers for that project. Which means that if there is an incident, we get the phone call and help figure out how to address said incident. Last year immediately after I was assigned a dam and knew nothing about it, the snowpack indicated that we would be surpassing the flood of record. Which means our reservoir level would be reaching it's highest point ever in the 50+ year operating history of the dam and we would need to monitor the dam 24-hours a day to ensure we were ready if anything started to happen (most dams fail on first-filling). I had the dubious pleasure of spending five days in North Dakota freezing my little butt off running around the dam 12 hours a day looking for a problem. Luckily no problems. Unluckily I had to miss our annual A-Basin beach party yet got to hear all about how fun it was and how nice the weather was while I was wondering if I'd ever warm up.
A few weeks ago, the dam operators called me. Current predictions were that we'd get the same flood again this year. I've been on pins and needles waiting to find out how bad it is and whether I'd be spending another weekend in the lovely lovely town.
I've just heard everything is running along swimmingly (ha) with no issues and we won't get anywhere near the reservoir levels we got to last year.
Now, that's something to celebrate!
